How to Build a WhatsApp AI Chatbot for Your Business in Nigeria (2026 Guide)

If your customers reach you on WhatsApp (and in Nigeria, most do), you already know the problem. Messages pile up. The same questions come in fifty times a day: “How much?”, “Do you deliver to Lekki?”, “Is this still available?”. Reply late and the customer has already bought from someone else.

A WhatsApp AI chatbot fixes this by answering instantly, day and night, and handing over to you when a real person is needed. This guide shows you how to set one up properly, including the new rules Meta introduced in 2026.

If you are new to the idea, start with my plain-English explainer: What is an AI agent?

First, the 2026 rules you must know

From 15 January 2026, Meta changed the WhatsApp Business Solution terms. The change bans general-purpose AI chatbots, meaning open-ended assistants that answer anything (the way ChatGPT was once available on WhatsApp). According to respond.io’s summary of the policy, business-focused bots remain allowed.

In practical terms, your chatbot is fine if it serves your business:

  • Answering FAQs about your products and services
  • Taking orders and bookings
  • Sending order and delivery updates
  • Routing customers to the right person or department
  • Sending reminders and notifications customers agreed to receive

What is not allowed is using WhatsApp to offer a general AI assistant as the product itself. So design your bot around your business, and instruct it politely to decline unrelated questions.

If you get a handful of messages a day, set up the free app properly first: catalogue, labels, quick replies and away messages. You may not need a bot yet. If you get dozens or hundreds of messages, the Platform is where an AI chatbot makes sense.

What it costs

There are two parts:

  1. Your platform provider: you connect to WhatsApp through a provider (often called a BSP) or a chatbot platform. Most charge a monthly subscription, and many have trial or starter plans.
  2. Meta’s messaging charges: replies you send within 24 hours of a customer messaging you are generally free. Business-initiated template messages (such as marketing broadcasts) are charged per message, with rates depending on the message category and country.

Prices change, so always check your chosen provider’s current pricing page before committing, and start small.

Step-by-step: setting up your WhatsApp AI chatbot

Step 1: Get your business details in order

You will need a Meta Business account (business.facebook.com), your business name, address and website, and ideally business verification. Having a website helps; see my guide on building a business website with AI.

Step 2: Choose the phone number carefully

A number connected to the Platform cannot be used at the same time in the regular WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app. Many businesses use a new dedicated number, or migrate their existing business number after backing up important chats. Decide this before you start.

Step 3: Choose a platform

Look for a provider that offers: an AI or knowledge-base feature, a shared inbox so staff can take over conversations, easy integration with Google Sheets or your order system, and support for businesses in Nigeria. Compare two or three, and test with their trial plans.

Step 4: Build the knowledge base

This is the most important step, and where most bots fail. Write down clearly:

  • Products and services with current prices
  • Delivery areas, fees and timelines
  • Payment methods (transfer, card, pay on delivery)
  • Opening hours and location
  • Return, refund and exchange policy
  • Your 20 most common customer questions and the correct answers

Step 5: Write the bot’s instructions

Here is a simple template you can adapt:

“You are the customer assistant for [Business Name], a [type of business] in [city]. Answer only questions about our products, prices, delivery and orders using the information provided. Be warm, polite and brief. Use simple English. Never invent prices or promise delivery dates not in the information. If a customer wants a refund, is upset, or asks something you cannot answer, say you will connect them to a team member and hand over. Politely decline questions unrelated to our business.”

Step 6: Set up human handover

Always give customers a way to reach a real person, for example by typing “agent” or when the bot detects frustration. Make sure a staff member is notified and responds quickly.

Step 7: Test with real scenarios

Before going live, ask ten friends to message the bot like real customers: pidgin, typos, voice-note style questions, rude messages, unusual requests. Fix every wrong or awkward answer.

Step 8: Launch and monitor

For the first two weeks, read every conversation daily. You will quickly see which questions the bot struggles with. Update the knowledge base and instructions weekly.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Launching with an incomplete price list. The bot will either guess or keep saying “I don’t know”.
  • No human backup. Customers get frustrated when they are stuck with a bot.
  • Spamming broadcasts. Only message people who opted in. Too many blocks and reports can get your number restricted.
  • Collecting unnecessary personal data. Ask only for what you need to fulfil the order, and protect it in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
  • Set and forget. Prices and policies change. Update the bot whenever they do.

Can you do this as a service for other businesses?

Absolutely. Setting up and maintaining WhatsApp AI chatbots for small businesses is one of the most practical AI services you can offer in Nigeria, with a setup fee plus monthly support. My AI Agents Business Playbook covers building agents and turning them into a business, step by step.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI chatbots banned on WhatsApp in 2026?

No. Meta banned general-purpose AI assistants that use WhatsApp as a distribution channel. Business chatbots that answer customer questions, take orders and send updates for your own business are still allowed.

Can I add an AI chatbot to the free WhatsApp Business app?

The free app offers basic automation such as greeting messages, away messages and quick replies. Full AI chatbots generally run on the WhatsApp Business Platform through a provider.

How much does a WhatsApp chatbot cost in Nigeria?

You will usually pay a monthly platform subscription plus Meta’s charges for business-initiated template messages. Replies within 24 hours of a customer message are generally free from Meta. Check current provider pricing before you start.

Do I need a new phone number?

A number connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform cannot be used in the regular WhatsApp apps at the same time. Many businesses use a dedicated number for their chatbot.
